Darrel and Cristo took the 50+ yoga & dance enthusiasts through their paces with high-powered Yoga moves that were then translated into funky jazz dance moves and vice-versa. Two hours of alternating between yoga and dance saw the fusion of two beautiful worlds of art come together. Moves like Mandalasana (the wheel) were cleverly incorporated as a hip rotation into the Dance routine.
There was little break between each section, the moves from both disciplines became increasingly more challenging. Warrior One poses to Warrior Two poses followed by half-moon poses seemed way too easy for this class. Darrel encouraged participants to try koundinyasana and hanumasana - level 2 poses that required arm strength and hamstring flexibility - and many were able to manoeuver themselves into these positions successfully! The flexibility and strength bode well for the choreographed dance moves as they required being able to isolate different body parts, and to move in multidirectional planes at quite a fast pace.
The nice surprise of the day was having DJ Rob diverse selection of music genres. Even he had to demonstrate incredible flexibility and agility to keep up with the constantly changing rhythm and tempo!
It was laughter all around when Cristo attempted an Adhomukhavrksasana on stage - otherwise known in layman's terms as "a handstand" (frightening to watch), and when Darrel attempted (most admirably) to shake his bootie.
The big finale saw all mats being cleared and the class split in two halves for an all-out "dance-off"! The last 15 minutes saw three encores of the routine performed by the whole class - it resembled a room full of professional dancers in rehearsal! We were impressed! The amazing time had by all was more than evident when the workshop ran overtime by 10 minutes. The only disappointing factor - it wasn't shirts off by Cristo and Darrel…….something that will need to be written into their contracts for the next workshop! |
