Michael Jackson Dance Workshop with Andrés & Derek

The scene was set. The lights were dimmed. This really was it ….

Andres Vesga and Derek Capps were poised on stage, dressed as the King of Pop himself, with their black wigs, large sunglasses, fedora hats, and silver gloves. Over 60 participants were waiting in rapt attention at the IFC studio, ready for the Michael Jackson workshop to begin.

There was a moment of silence before the show began. And then the music started … Andres and Derek gave an awe-inspiring opening performance, full of all the hallmarks that made M.J. so great. The moonwalk, toe standing, head and shoulder pops and countless spins, it was all there.

Then using interactive multimedia, the instructors gave the workshop participants the precise choreography for M.J.'s most-famous video, Thriller. A sea of 60 people and 60 silver gloves resembled a live audition for backup dancers at a Michael Jackson concert. Each click of the finger, each clap, each foot slide and the flick of the head, was perfectly and professionally executed. The participants mastered Thriller easily, and then it was onto the more challenging choreography of Dangerous.

Every participant was given a fedora hat for this second number. The eight count was made marginally easier by the lyrics to the song, which act as landmarks for the choreography :
"A touch, a kiss" - blow a kiss
"The girl was dangerous" - tip the fedora hat

Even these complex dance sequences didn't phase the punters, and we soon saw the boys performing the routine back to the girls, who gave it their own back again. It is obvious why Dangerous was Jackson's fastest-selling album ever in the United States, with seven million shipped in under two months.

Everyone floated out of the IFC studio humming the songs and with the lyrics and images of Thriller and Dangerous permanently etched on the brain. We tip our hats to Andres and Derek for an enthralling Michael Jackson workshop.

The King of Pop is still alive in our hearts, and in our studios.
