Hand Wrapping
Hand and wrist injuries are very common among boxers and kick-boxers. Because there are so many small bones in your hand, it is highly recommended that you take precautions to protect them. Proper hand wrapping is the best method for preventing injury when participating in boxing or kick-boxing classes. Wearing hand wraps will provide support through the wrist and hand, which will decrease the chance of injury. We encourage clients to wear them during classes and while using the boxing facilities at Pure.
1. (2)Your hand should be held open, palm facing down with your fingers spread apart. Begin by placing the hand wrap thumb loop around your thumb and be sure that the stitched side on the hand wrap is facing down (1). Bring the wrap across the back of your hand and wrap around your wrist 2-3 times to anchor your wrists for support.
*You want to keep the hand wrap snug throughout this process, but not so tight that it will cut off your circulation.
2. (4)Bring the wrap across the back of your hand from the inside wrist and around your palm, (5) then across the top of your knuckles.
3. (6)Wrap around the knuckles 2-3 times. From the top of your knuckles, wrap across the back of your hand from the outside of your index finger toward your wrist and around. This will create and "X" pattern across the back of the hand.
4. (7)From the inside wrist, wrap completely around your thumb and back toward your wrist on the palm side of your hand to anchor your thumb into place(8). Wrap from the thumb over the back of your hand and around your wrist.
5. (9)From the inside wrist, wrap over the back of your hand and through the space between your pinky and ring finger (10). Wrap around your palm back toward your index finger and down towards the outside of your wrist. Repeat for each finger (11, 12, 13).
*Be sure to keep the wrap as flat as possible and twist-free.
6. With the last finger completed, bring the wrap across the palm back toward your wrist. Anchor around wrist 1 or 2 times, and then from the inside wrist back up to the knuckles (14, 15, 16).
7. Secure your wrist with the remaining hand wrap. Be sure to wrap it snugly to provide support for your wrist (17).
8. (19)Fasten the Hook and Loop Closure and you're done.
Testing: The wrapping should be snug and support your wrist. The support through the wrist should limit your range of motion and you should be able to make a tight fist without cutting off circulation to your fingers (19, 20)
